------------------------------------------------

Texas-based experimental percussionist Lavatone makes a commanding entrance on the Lost Tribe Sound label, with the new double album, ‘Lunar Mining and Excavation’.  The album will be released in two parts ‘Mining’ (out Nov. 3rd) and Excavation (out Dec. 1st). LM&E embarks on a rare concept album from the artist. This is heavy, filthy, industrial workplace, Total Recall eyes-popping-out-of-your-head type stuff, only no air this time, Cohaagan. It’s the ugly side of Space Music… overworked machinery, duct taped space suits, turds hovering at low-gravity in the porta-johns, pounding, grinding, noise and catharsis.

If all that comes across as hellish and unapproachable, rest assured Lavatone’s a master of low-frequency sound and polyrhythms. While the label first discovered his impressive back-catalog in 2021, Drew Holder, the guy behind the alias, has been making his special breed of drone and thump music since the mid 90’s. While his mechanized approach takes on structural similarities to that of electronic music, Holder doesn’t even own a synth, and the percussive elements are all created by hand before being fed into a machine for further manipulation. This lends a deep, tactile richness to the music. This electroacoustic effect was well apparent in works like 2021 ‘Elevator,’ where these steady, brutish rhythms were aided by a multitude of strangely exotic offshoots, as they tunneled their way through a steely latticework of controlled noise.

With ‘Lunar Mining and Excavation,’ Lavatone reigns in some of the ritualistic or exotic aspects of previous releases, opting instead for gritty machine-like emulations. The thud of mammoth rock-pulverizers, earth-boring drills the size of skyscrapers, the endless clacking of conveyor belts carrying mineral to the surface, all help to inform the droning backdrop of this dystopian mining operation seated on this cold, inhospitable terrain.
